Chairman’s Corner

Cold room

Many members may not know that in the bowels of the club is a cold room from which the draft beer magically flows.  We believe this was constructed in the 1960s and has given the club sterling service over the past 60 years.  However, it has fallen into a poor state of repair and we are currently in the process of bringing it up to standard.

Recently, the draught beer line hardware was replaced, a new safer beer line cleaning procedure instituted, and alterations to gas monitoring devices and lighting made to comply with the latest regulations.

The flooring had deteriorated significantly, with rotten timbers sprouting fungi, and torn metal sheeting.

Gary Forster has arranged for a contractor to strip out the flooring and replace it with a reinforced concrete slab with waterproof edging.  As you can imagine, it will take some days for the concrete to cure in this location and with current high humidity.  The club will be without draft beer for about two weeks but when it returns it will be safer, cleaner and better tasting!

New Club Representatives

Louise Amos and Julie Dunn represented Lindfield Rollers for the first time, playing with Phil Lewis at Asquith on Saturday 14 May.  They didn’t quite make the list of prize winners but performed strongly.

April Events

I would like to thank Marlene Black for special table decorations and prizes over Easter and Anzac Day.  They were very much appreciated by the members.

Liz Holister

While Brian has been absent with some health issues, Liz Holister has filled the breach magnificently. Without hesitation she has been taking in green fees, preparing afternoon tea, staffing the bar and cleaning up afterwards.  We are very fortunate to have her at our club and our sincere thanks go to her.

From the Women’s President

Our ladies enjoyed the Easter Festivities at the club on Easter Saturday, 16th April, and are keen to have more celebrations on significant occasions in the future.   Thank you to Marlene Black and Liz for organising the activities and prizes.

A team of five ladies represented our club at the St Ives Fives on Tuesday 10th May.  We all had a fun day, and everyone involved was very grateful that the weather stayed fine for most of the day.

The Lindfield Shield is being held in July and we are looking forward to welcoming women’s teams from all over Sydney to participate.

We are very pleased to welcome the transfer of five ladies from Killara Bowling Club. Louise, Ngoc, Julie, Anne and Susie are new and valuable members of Lindfield Rollers.  They represented LRBC for the first time at Asquith on Saturday, 14th May.

A word from the Editor

Thank you to all those Club members who have sent me material for inclusion in the Newsletter. It is always good to receive this input, whether it is news about activities or events, people and their milestones, or simply something that might make us all chuckle. Please keep it up, but bear in mind, not everything can be included every time and some submissions do require a bit of judicious editing on my part.

I am happy to report that we now have on hand a good stock of uniform shirts for men and women, both short sleeve and long sleeve. Short sleeve shirts are available at a cost of $50 each and the long sleeve versions are priced at $55. We also have caps ($15) and a very limited supply of other items.

Our stock of the dark blue fleeces that many of us like to wear in colder months is about to be enhanced. If you would like to purchase one of these, please let me know, indicating your size and whether you are looking for the short sleeve (vest) format or the long sleeve jacket type. We do not yet have firm quotes on pricing from our supplier, but it is expected that the jacket version will cost around $60-70, with the vest form presumably somewhat below that. I would like to place our order within the next week or so, so if you are wanting a new fleece, please advise me by email or text (0417 212 099) as soon as you can.

Happy (warm and cosy) bowling to all.

What’s been happening?

Competitions

Congratulations to Barrie Jones who emerged as winner of this year’s Consistency Singles competition, defeating Kuzma Petkovic in the final. Meanwhile, the Minor Singles competition has advanced to the final stage too and finalists Geoff Kopping and Ted Cook will face off in the coming days. The 2022 Club Triples competition is also nearing completion. The Men’s Major Pairs is just getting underway and entries for the Men’s Major Singles, Women’s Major Singles and the Women’s Major Pairs closed on May 14th.

100 Years Young

A centenary is always something to celebrate and never more so than when it is one of our own who achieves that remarkable feat. So, our hearty congratulations go to Marie Milne, who turned 100 on May 5th. Although no longer bowling, Marie remains a member of our club and is highly regarded for her 22 years of service as treasurer of the Women’s Club in its Roseville days. To mark the occasion, Marianne Coningsby presented a bouquet of flowers to Marie on behalf of Lindfield Rollers.

Borrowed Bowls

As you will be aware, the Club maintains a selection of bowls sets for use by visitors who arrive without their own bowls, by members who, for whatever reason, are temporarily without their own bowls, and by new bowlers, who have not yet had a chance to acquire their own set. Some of these borrow bowls have been donated to Lindfield Rollers, while others have been purchased by the Club at significant expense. More new bowls are on order. These borrow bowls are especially valuable when introducing new people to the game. It is very much the expectation that all bowlers will acquire their own bowls as soon as practicable after joining the Club.

However, that is not what is happening in every case. Some of our bowlers are continuing to use the borrow bowls more or less on a permanent basis and a few sets of bowls seem to have disappeared from the racks completely.

Please ensure, therefore, if you do borrow bowls from the Club collection, that you return them to the rack at the end of the game and do not put them in your locker or take them home. The borrow bowls are Club property and they represent an important asset for the Club that should be available to all as necessary.

Looking ahead …

The Super-Six-Sets Are On Again/Off Again

Our ever popular Super-Six-Sets Carnival was scheduled for Friday, 24 June but that date has now been found to be problematic and the carnival will not proceed on that day. Please stay tuned for an update on when (or if) this wonderful day of bowls, prizes, fun, food and friendships will take place.

Representing LRBC

The quid pro quo of us encouraging players from elsewhere to come to Lindfield on our carnival days is, of course, our Club sending players to other clubs on their special days. In that regard, is good to note that we have a side playing in the St Ives Tapner Tournament Jacobs Creek Invitational event on Monday, 16 May. We have also entered a side in Neutral Bay’s Peter Russell Trophy on Saturday, 16 July and had a team entered in a turnaround triples carnival at Asquith on Saturday, 14 May.

Pennants are Coming Up

The 2022 Zone 9 Men’s Pennant competition is scheduled to commence in mid-August. This year the grades have been reconstituted into just four tiers and we have entered a team in each of Division 3 and Division 4. To maximise our playing strength, it is our aim to have all ongoing Club competitions completed by mid-August. The remaining 2022 Club competitions will then take place after the Pennant season.

A Smile on Your Dial

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa taking her faithful old poodle named Cuddles along for company. One day the old poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch. The old poodle thinks, 'Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!'

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old poodle exclaims loudly, 'Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here.' Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.

'Whew!' says the leopard, 'That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!' Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the entire scene from a nearby tree figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, monkey, hop onto my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!' Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?', but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says:

'Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!'
